Artist Trade

Okay! So how this piece came to be is a longish story. My friend Claire Brankin, who graduated from KCAI's Illustration program with me, made an incredible wood-cut illustration from Dostoevsky's "The Brothers Karamazov".(Look at it here: And follow the blog, while you're there!)

Now, woodcuts are one of my favorite mediums, Dostoevsky is one of my favorite authors and Claire is one of my favorite artists, so naturally I had to have one of these prints.

Claire noticed me drooling on Facebook and offered an artist trade! Now for the other part of the story. My other friend, Nicki Doo (whose blog I cannot find, sadly. Her lettering is incredible) lent and then gave me a how-to guide to medieval illumination! I only just unpacked it, and oh! How excited I was.

So! I am using the techniques in the book (sort of... lots of improv) to create an illuminated initial for Claire, and in return I shall have a beautiful woodcut.

Of course, this is nowhere near done. But this is my first time leafing! Very pleased with the leafing results. Very excited to do more of it.

Lil Lucy

Alright! I am very excited for this skin. My dad hooked me up with all his puppet making gooey stuff, including my all-time-favorite-expensive-thing Pros-aide. I was using Pros-aide right and left when I was at Laika, it's like liquid magic. I thickened some up with cabosil powder and used the paste to smooth out the seams in the fabric.

Once it was dry I tinted some latex with acrylic paint and voila! Boobs!

Tomorrow I'll work on smoothing the fabric at the edge of her neck, and probably start the anchoring on her feet.

New Desk!

Work on Lucy stalled this weekend while I worked on the house, and, most importantly, got my desk in order.
LOOK AT IT! It's beautiful! I have 8 electric outlets right in the top of my desk to plug all my things into and they all turn on and off with a switch under the desk! I have shelves on which to place my supplies and I have drawers in which to place the supplies that don't fit on the shelves! I have 8 feet of workspace, and an extra foot and a half that flips up at the end if I want it! I have so much space I ran out of things to put in all of the drawers available to me! And soon the vast wall above my space will be either a fabric wall or an inspiration wall... haven't decided...

Lil Lucy

Spent the day stitching the skin suit. Tomorrow I cover the whole thing with whatever rubbery substance of my choice (thank you, Dad, for all the samples of materials, can't wait to try them out)

Lil Lucy

\Okay! So! The progress got taken a little late in the game, but with my not having space/time to work for the past while, I felt it more important to get to work without interruption.

Struggling a little on the face paint job. The stylized lighting in the top image is very strong, and while I want to include the colors from the label in her paint job, if I make the lighting the same it will really limit my photography options.

On the other hand, I'm very pleased with the body. I made a lot of mistakes with the foam/skin on the Strong Man, and I am not going to let that happen again. Where the Strong Man's foam was held together with very stiff hot glue, this little lady is held together with some very loose stitches. She's much more flexible, as a result.

More Tattoo

More work on the tattoo. I am thinking about getting the fix ups in installments so I don't make the budgetary mistakes I made last time. First I want the color in her face, the hair and the basic linework. Later I will get the little details that make her cloak look so nice.

Tattoo Visitation

So as you may all be aware, I was young and dumb once upon a time (haha, who am I kidding? Still young and dumb folks) and I got myself this tattoo. Now, thankfully I do not regret the theme of this tattoo, as Mary is as wonderful now as she was then and ever will be. But the aesthetics leave something to be desired (for all you nubes, ask for a tattoo artist whose work is similar to what you want, and not the unknown guy who offered you a $50 discount)

Since getting this tattoo it has been my dream to get it fixed. Here are the early stages of what I am thinking. If you have any feedback, please give it to me now, as I have learned tattoos are permanent and I'd like to know the glaring flaws BEFORE I have them eternally etched into my flesh.

What I did today

I made flowers! This is not their final arrangement. I am planning on making some smaller, simpler ones and perhaps making a nice repeatable pattern.
